Simple Treatment If treatment is relatively simple and straightforward, a plan of treatment can be prepared and an estimated fee given for such treatment at the initial consultation appointment.

Complex Treatment If more complex treatment is necessary, it is frequently impossible to give details of a plan of treatment until further thought has been given to the problems and the x-rays and models of the teeth assessed further.

In order to facilitate this, the models may be mounted on a dental articulator that reproduces the 3D movements your jaws make and the movements that your lower teeth make over the upper teeth. This requires impressions and work by our technicians prior to time being spent for more detailed planning.

Following this, a report would be forwarded to you for consideration. If such an approach is required, additional fees in the region of £440 could be incurred. You would be advised if this was appropriate to plan your dental care before this work was commenced.

When the feasibility of using implants requires assessment and should the initial consultation indicate that it may be possible, it may be necessary to use the services of an imaging centre for a further more extensive computerised x-ray examination.

Fees vary depending upon the complexity of dental problems It is Dr Smyth’s view that no two situations are identical and treatment must be customised for each situation. For example a patient who exposes a little bit of their upper front teeth in full smile will not require the same treatment as someone who displays all of their upper front teeth and gums in full smile yet both may require a crown on a single tooth.

FAQ I am coming for a long appointment, what is there to do in Liverpool for my partner?

We try to make all chaperones comfortable whilst sitting outside our clinic room, there is a TV, newspapers and are happy to make tea and coffee.

In our shop row  there is a small supermarket and a cafe, they make great soup! It is a 5 minute walk to the Hunts Cross Railway Station, situated next to it is Metro cafe run by our friend Lorraine, great for tea, coffee and hot and cold food.

Canon EOS 1000D digital camera body – You can buy a body and a lens bundle together, the lens is okay for day-to-day photography but look at the alternatives which will be better quality although more expensive!

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG – a macro lens, chose Cannon fit

Canon Macrolite Adapter 58C – this lens adapter enables your ring flash to attach to the front of your lens which has a 58mm filter size.

Canon MR 14EX ring flash – expensive but well worth it

Memory – this Canon camera uses SD/SDHC memory cards, 2GB will hold a lot of photographs but memory is cheap so consider larger capacities like 4,8,16 up to 32GB. If you plan to make movies with a camera like the Canon EOS 500D then get the largest memory card you can afford.

Accessories – a card reader will help you download your pictures to your PC or laptop to view and store the photographs. An external hard drive is a good investment to make a regular back up of your PC and laptop e.g. 500GB or 1TB! A photo-printer if you want to print your images.

Re-chargeable batteries – you will need them! Two sets of four AA batteries for your ring flash (alkaline, lithium, rechargeable Ni-Cd or Ni-MH), you can charge them and help save the planet.

A camera bag – to protect your kit.

A selection of clinical photographs – the images that you can take on this type of camera/ring flash set up are very high quality and a well looked after camera will provide years of service. My pictures below are taken on the lowest  image setting so I do not have excessively large image files which would otherwise quickly fill up my PC hard drive.

I am studying for my MJDF qualification and I have been lucky enough to attend this superb course organised by Dr Nick Cooper and Dr Anwara Chambers. They hold regular meetings and have created an excellent website which guides you through putting together the folder of evidence you need to demonstrate your knowledge of the core dental subjects.

Colleagues at all different stages of their careers, principals (old timers, there I said it), newly qualified dentists and hospital based folk all attend the meetings. I am very impressed with the calibre and dedication of the attendees, I personally have learnt a great deal out of every meeting.

Anwara and Nick run through the topics you need to study, they are knowledgeable tutors and teach using PowerPoints, discussions, handouts and practice questions.

Core skills on-line

Their website guides you through pulling together all the written work, photographic evidence, references, and helps you produce your case presentation and clinical audit. Here are some more website features:

Conclusion

This is first rate, contemporary postgraduate dentistry, I have learnt a vast amount in the 12 months I have been attending the meetings. I have just signed up for another year and plan to do the qualification in 2011. The website is a brilliant tool to guide you through the preparation of your portfolio, it fun, informative and great for busy dental surgeons aiming at striking that work/life balance. Whether you plan to do the exam or not it will bring you bang up-to-date with core dental skills that are an important part of everyday dentistry.
